Adrian Roach believes he will be better suited to professional boxing than the amateur ranks.

The 23-year-old makes his pro debut against Brent Coxworthy in a four-round super-welterweight bout at The Victualling Yard in Dockyard on Saturday [June 28].

Coxworthy [1-3-0] heads into the fight off the first win of his career – a technical knockout victory over fellow Canadian Matt Macintyre in Bedford last summer.

“There’s a big difference between the amateur and pro game,” Roach told Bernews.

“You’re not just looking to score points; you’re looking to do damage.

“It actually suits my style and I’m looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.”

While proud of his accomplishments in the amateur circuit – including representing Bermuda at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador and being named Boxer of the Year at Crandall University’s Blue & Gold Awards in March – Roach says he is ready for the next chapter.

“I’m excited about my debut – all the hard work is done,” said Roach, who will have coaches Leo Richardson, Varo “Pelon” Andrade, Anthony Stoneham and Michael Parsons in his corner against Coxworthy.

“It’s a different feeling this time. I’ve laid it all out [in the training camp] and feel primed and ready.

“I’ve come so far since I first started boxing at Controversy Gym as a teenager.

“It’s been a journey that I probably didn’t think was possible back then.

“I’m taking the next step now and hopefully I can reach some new heights.”

Aiming for three to four fights this year, Roach credits those who came before him – Bermudian pro boxers such as Troy Darrell, Nikki Bascome, Andre Lambe, Tyler Christopher, and Parsons – for paving the way.

“So many guys have come before me like Troy Darrell back in the day and in recent times Nikki, Andre, Tyler and Mikey,” said Roach, who became a father five months ago to a son named Judah.

“They’ve paved the way for me and made my life a lot easier. They have connections and have formed alliances with certain overseas promoters.

“I’m able to piggyback off it and I’m thankful for all their hard work.”
