Column: Pearman On Achilles, Cuisine & More
[Column written by Mikaela Ian Pearman]
If you’re searching for the best lunch in Bermuda, somewhere with sweeping ocean views, imaginative cocktails, and an ingredient-driven menu that feels both global and grounded, Achilles should be at the top of your list.
Set in the iconic St. George’s Bermuda, Achilles offers more than just beautiful food. It delivers an experience steeped in intention, from the hand-crafted cocktails to the culinary creativity on every plate. I recently spent a leisurely afternoon here, and what unfolded was one of the most delicious, thoughtful lunches I’ve had on the island.
Let’s Start With the Cocktails
The cocktail menu at Achilles reads like a collection of short stories, each drink layered with meaning, mood, and flavor. Bartender Zarai whipped up two different cocktails for the tatsing. My first sip was Koh Paradise, a refreshing and herbaceous gin cocktail made with Hendrick’s, kaffir lime leaves, Thai basil, cucumber, lime, ginger, and a splash of soda. It was light and botanical, almost spa-like, and immediately set the tone for a long, luxurious lunch. Think ocean breeze in a glass.
Next came Dreams of Cool, a more decadent, structured sip that somehow managed to feel both sultry and bright. It blended saffron-infused Grey Goose with Aperol, spiced syrup, lemon juice, and egg white. Slightly bitter, gently sweet, and silk-smooth on the finish. It was the kind of cocktail that makes you sit back and smile between sips.
Presentation-wise, each cocktail looked like it belonged on a magazine cover, with thoughtful garnishes and vibrant color that matched the lush, coastal backdrop. If you’re a cocktail lover visiting Bermuda, this spot deserves a dedicated afternoon.
A Culinary Philosophy Rooted in Integrity
What truly elevates Achilles is its philosophy. At the heart of the kitchen’s approach lies a deep respect for ingredients. Their commitment is clear: meticulously sourced organic produce, premium meats from sustainable farms, and the freshest ocean bounty from local fishermen.
This isn’t just a tagline, it’s a mission. The team works directly with Bermuda growers, collaborates with fishermen based on seasonal availability, and partners with trusted suppliers for top-quality meats and poultry. That level of integrity shows up in every bite.
Small Plates, Big Flavor
I began with a trio of small plates, each with its own personality.
The Dyna Roll brought a playful twist to the traditional sushi roll – shrimp tempura wrapped with scallions, mango, shishito peppers, and spicy mayo. It was crunchy, creamy, and just spicy enough to keep things interesting.
Then came the Melitzanes, a Mediterranean-inspired eggplant dish topped with grape tomatoes, feta, Kalamata olives, oregano, and mint, served alongside crostini. Earthy, bright, and briny, it was the kind of dish you could eat every day and never tire of.
The Gamberi alla Griglia, grilled tiger shrimp with salmoriglio, toasted breadcrumbs, and Kalamata olive crumble, was an unexpected standout. Smoky, savory, and perfectly charred, it was rich in flavor without feeling heavy.
Mains That Transport You
For the main course, I opted for the Khao San Chicken, a Thai-style BBQ chicken dish that came with sticky rice, local papaya salad, and a spicy-sweet nam jim sauce. The chicken thighs were juicy, charred, and marinated to perfection. The papaya salad was crunchy and refreshing, making it the perfect foil for the richness of the meat. This dish felt like a true journey – layered, vibrant, and emotionally satisfying.
I also sampled the Spago di Mare, a seafood spaghetti loaded with clams, shrimp, calamari, and local catch. Garlic and chili added just the right amount of heat, and the pasta was perfectly al dente. It was a love letter to coastal Mediterranean cuisine, beautifully translated through Bermuda’s own seafood bounty.
Dessert, Because Of Course
Despite being satisfyingly full, dessert was non-negotiable. The Japanese Cotton Cheesecake was a dream – light, fluffy, and just sweet enough, paired with yuzu, white chocolate crumble, berries, and miso caramel sauce. A whisper of umami made it feel extra grown-up.
Then came the Mille-Feuille, which was everything you want in a classic layered dessert: flaky puff pastry, dark chocolate ganache, sweet strawberries, and airy Chantilly cream. Rich, romantic, and deeply satisfying.
The Verdict
Achilles isn’t just one of the best new restaurants in Bermuda, it’s a destination. The view is breathtaking, the service is warm and intentional, and the food is layered with thought, care, and creativity. It’s a place where you can indulge in a slow afternoon, sip something beautiful, and be reminded of how good a well-designed dining experience can feel.
Whether you’re a local planning your next girls’ lunch or a visitor searching for where to eat in Bermuda, Achilles offers something extraordinary. The cocktails alone are worth the trip, but the kitchen’s commitment to quality, and its reverence for local sourcing make this restaurant a standout.
If you’re craving a long, luxurious lunch with a view, a vibe, and unforgettable flavor, Achilles is calling.
